Together is Better

I first discovered Simon Sinek on Ted.com where his video is the third most watched video.

His video is about how leaders can become “leaders” and lead their team to success. The whole idea is that leaders work together with their team, with a shared vision and goals. There is an African proverb that says, “To go fast, go alone. To go far, go together.”

Sinek’s book, Together is Better demonstrates that just: the qualities of a leader, and how they can work more effectively and cohesively with their team towards success. One of my favourite lines from the book is “A star wants to see himself rise to the top. A leader wants to see those around him become stars.”

This what sets a boss apart from a leader. Sadly, I see a lot of people around me who want to become CEO/ Boss for their selves. The team don’t really matter. I know this book helped me become a better leader at my own workplace, and it’s the little things that go a long way. My team is so sufficient today that even when I am not there, they can manage on their own. I have given them enough confidence that they are very capable team players.

Together is Better is an illustrated book (illustrations by Ethan M. Aldridge) and follows the story of three friends who are playing together in a playground on an average day. Till this one day, when a king (read that as bully) bugs one of the friend. He stands up to the king.

This is the moment the three friends become more united, and consider together what it means to do something on purpose- “to do something with purpose.”

I wish I could share literally every single page, because each page has inspiring lines about what it means to be a leader.

The point of the book is really help us see that while we can build a life of happiness and success alone, but would be as happy as we could be with others? There are three questions that many of us struggle with:

What are you going to do with your life?

What are you doing with your life now?

Do you have goals? A vision? A clear sense of why you do what you do?

This book will help you answer the above questions and a whole lot more.

Simon Sinek is an inspiring optimist who believes in a brighter future for humanity. Together is Better is one such book I feel all leaders should read.

Why? Because Together is indeed Better!
