Suicide Squad

For the last so many months, there was a lot of hype for Suicide Squad. I for one, didn’t really get into the whole hype. Having seen the movie, in a cinema that was full of fanboys and fangirls, who would cheer and scream and applaud during the movie, I get why the hype was so high and the eventual disappointment by getting negative reviews from the critics.

I am not going to get into the whole details of the movie (there are umpteen reviews out there already) so my take on this movie is from a layman’s point of view. I went into this movie with zero expectations, not knowing anything about this movie (except that Jared Leto is playing the Joker).

My verdict: it’s not a bad at all.

There are two major selling points to this movie:

  1. Margot Robbie in the role of Harley Quinn. She did full justice to the character, hogging all the awesome one-liners and action sequences. Her comic timings, her attitude, her action were spot on and were a treat to watch.
  2. Secondly, Will Smith playing the role of Deadshot! I don’t know where he came out from rather unexpectedly, but he made a huge impact in the movie. His demeanor and controlled anger, yet aggressively fighting off the baddies was something of a revelation.

Then there are two disappointments:

  1. Jared Leto, playing the Joker, had only 8 minutes of screen time in the entire movie that stretched out to more than 2 hours. I for one thought he would be the villain, but turns out he isn’t.
  2. The story. Nothing we haven’t seen before in all these Avengers and X Men movies, and towards the end just got a little loopy.

Overall, it was a watchable movie. The 3D was pointless.

There were loads of people in the cinema who were cheering and applauding so I can imagine how much this movie must have meant to them. I am also losing track of all the superhero movies coming out—apparently in 2018 there will be a slew of superhero movies which analysts are predicting will be end of such movies. Suicide Squad was refreshing in the sense that it’s all about government gathering up the villains to fight off the enemy.
